I was really pleased to include Fire Safe Zone in my book about children and teenagers who set fires. This colourful and creative fire safety board game allows for relaxed yet meaningful conversations about fire safety, feelings and decision making, which are ideal for generating debate and discussions amongst teenagers in particular.
I used the Fire Safety Zone game with several of my younger students, they loved playing the game. I liked the questions and interaction of it. It was fun and didn't seem like we were learning a lesson, but really we were.
Over the years we have utilized various education intervention programs for younger children and adolescents. One of the few materials available for "tweener" aged children between 6 and 10 is the Fire Safe Zone game. We have found that the Fire Safe Zone game can assist the child in communicating thoughts and feelings. The game can be used not only with the children, but with the family as well so that it educates both the child and family.
It's very well made and will hold up to years of use.
My students have a range of academic, cognitive and social challenges. The game provided an effective and engaging vehicle for discussing topics that are critically important for early teens: decision-making and problem-solving applied to physical and emotional safety. Fire Safe Zone also allowed them to practice communication skills in an authentic way. The scenarios were believable and fueled discussion. Students seemed to enjoy the game. I would recommend Fire Safe Zone to special educators, social skills teachers and speech and language pathologists.
